QUICKLIME AND DOLOLIME

IN EAF STEELMAKING

Quicklime (CaO) and Dololime (CaO·MgO) are essential fluxes used in Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) steelmaking to refine molten steel and optimize slag chemistry.
Quicklime (Calcium Oxide): Reacts with acidic impurities like silica, phosphorus, and sulfur, promoting their removal through slag. It also helps form a basic, fluid slag that improves desulfurization and protects refractory linings.
Dololime (Dolomitic Lime): Contains both CaO and MgO, enhancing slag volume and viscosity control. The MgO component helps prevent refractory wear by saturating the slag and reducing MgO pickup from furnace linings.
Both materials are added during scrap melting and refining stages, playing a vital role in slag formation, impurity removal, and steel quality control.
